More than 600 Shia Pilgrims Hospitalized in Iraq Due to Chlorine Gas Leak – Shia pilgrims hospitalized Iraq chlorine gas leak

More than 600 Shia pilgrims in Iraq have been briefly hospitalized with respiratory problems after inhaling chlorine as the result of a leak at a water treatment station, according to authorities. The incident occurred overnight between the Shia holy cities of Najaf and Karbala.

All Pilgrims Treated

In a statement, Iraq’s Ministry of Health reported ‘621 cases of asphyxia’ due to the chlorine gas leak in Karbala. All affected individuals have received necessary care and have been discharged in good health. Security forces attributed the incident to a chlorine leak from a water station on the Karbala-Najaf Road.

This unfortunate event highlights the challenges faced by pilgrims in Iraq, where infrastructure issues persist due to years of conflicts and corruption. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety standards in public facilities.

Earlier in July, Iraq witnessed a tragic incident when a massive fire at a shopping center in Kut claimed the lives of over 60 people, emphasizing the urgent need for improved safety measures across the country.

As millions of Shia Muslim pilgrims gather in Karbala for Arbaeen, a period of mourning and commemoration, authorities continue to monitor the situation and ensure the well-being of all visitors.
